NC charter school shuts amid funding probe
Bridges Academy, one of the oldest charter schools in North Carolina, is to shut as a criminal investigation continues into whether state funding was fraudulently received. Anjanette Grube, a North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman remarked: “In March of 2021, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation opened an investigation into allegations that Bridges Academy charter school fraudulently obtained excess funding from the state of North Carolina. The investigation remains ongoing."

Lancaster elementary school student caught with gun on campus
Lancaster County deputies and school officials have confirmed that a 10-year-old student at Erwin Elementary School brought a loaded firearm to class. Doug Barfield, spokesman for the sheriff's office, stated: “We can say that no one was hurt and we are investigating the source of the loaded pistol. We are taking this very seriously.”
New Hanover County Schools transgender policy discussion attracts protest
Protesters clashed at the New Hanover County Board of Education Center Tuesday evening as the board's policy on transgender student athletes was discussed. Vice Chair Nelson Beaulieu remarked: "I understand there is a lot of passion on both sides of this issue. We were elected to make the tough decisions. This is one of them."
Asheville City Schools bus driver pay changes discussed
The Asheville City Board of Education has heard several options to alter the hours or pay of custodians and teacher assistants who also serve as bus drivers. Executive Director of Finance Georgia Harvey noted that even when driving a bus and doing other duties, some employees do not always work 40 hours a week, but are paid for that many hours.
School Support Staff Persons scheme instituted in Darlington County
The Darlington County School District is to name a School Support Staff Person of the Year in each of its schools, with superintendent Dr. Tim Newman noting that “Our support staff are extremely dedicated and hardworking employees." He went on: “We appreciate all that goes on behind the scenes to keep our district moving forward. Their hard work creates safe and effective learning environments for our students, keeping our schools, districts and buses running during the pandemic."
Horry County plans to recruit 100 teachers
Horry County Schools is to hire almost 100 teachers in a bid to help students make up for lost learning during the pandemic. Candace Lane, the district’s executive director for middle school commented: “We all know that the teacher is going to make the biggest impact in student learning. We have a lot of things that have happened, no matter whether we’re dealing with poverty or whether we’re dealing with a pandemic. The educator in the classroom is going to have the most impact on a student.”
Sumter School District budget meeting to take place
Sumter School District's fiscal 2022 budget is to be discussed at a virtual meeting next week. Electronic or telephone submissions are required as meetings remain closed to the public.
La Grange schools in lockdown amid police operation
La Grange Elementary and EB Frink Middle School went on modified lockdown after the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office helped NCBSI Criminal Apprehension Team, Greenville Police Department and Greene County Sheriff's Office apprehend two suspects with active attempted homicide warrants at a nearby property.

NC House Education Committee backs high school “adjunct instructors” legislation
North Carolina's House Education Committee has backed legislation allowing people to become high school “adjunct instructors” after completing one college semester of teacher preparation classes. Sen. Jim Burgin commented: “I think this is going to give a real opportunity for a lot of people that are not ready to retire and go home and sit to go into the schools and help these young people get excited about education again.”
