TWITTER AGREED TO PAY WHISTLEBLOWER $7M IN JUNE SETTLEMENT
Twitter agreed in June to pay about $7m to the whistleblower whose allegations will be part of Tesla founder Elon Musk's case against the company, the Wall Street Journal has reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The whistleblower, Peiter "Mudge" Zatko, who was fired by the social media platform in January, last month accused the company of falsely claiming it had a solid security plan and making misleading statements about its defenses against hackers and spam accounts. The settlement was completed days before Zatko filed his whistleblower complaint in July. Zatko, who had been Twitter's security head,  said in his complaint that he “uncovered extreme, egregious deficiencies by Twitter in every area of his mandate,” including privacy, digital and physical security, platform integrity and content moderation.

QUIET QUITTING IS ‘A REALLY DUMB IDEA’
Workplace maven Josh Bersin posts on LinkedIn to draw attention to an essay on his website that looks at why quiet quitting “is a really bad idea.” Bersin writes: “Yes, people are overworked and burned out - but there are far better ways to make life better than to secretly ‘check out’ at work,” and he advises his readers: “If you’re just personally fed up, either tell someone or do something about it. We as employees have much more power than you think.”

SOCIAL MEDIA FIRMS TO TESTIFY
Facebook parent Meta, Alphabet's YouTube, Twitter and short video app TikTok are to testify next week before the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on social media's impact on homeland security. The committee said the hearing will be an opportunity "to understand the extent to which social media companies’ business models, through algorithms, targeted advertising, and other operations and practices, contribute to the amplification of harmful content and other threats to homeland security."

ROYAL SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS TURN DARK
Changes have been made to official Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts of the Royal Family following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The official crest, visible across the accounts, used to be swathed in royal purple but now appears in black and white. Separately, the official Twitter account for Canada’s Drag Race (the Canadian version of the popular RuPaul’s Drag Race TV franchise) had to delete an unfortunate social media post about “the crown” being “up for grabs” that appeared hours before the Queen’s death was announced. The post was promptly deleted when the news broke  – but not before people managed to screenshot evidence of its existence. “Possibly an all-time deleted tweet,” wrote Huffington Post’s Philip Lewis, alongside an image of the post.
