Education programs shift agencies

The U.S. Department of Education is transferring more than 100 programs to other federal agencies through interagency agreements as part of the Trump administration’s broader effort to dismantle the department, though full closure would still require congressional approval. Programs spanning K–12 education, higher education, student loans, and school safety are being redistributed to agencies including Labor, Health and Human Services, State, Interior, and Treasury, with existing Education Department staff expected to continue managing them during the transition. While officials say funding will continue uninterrupted, early implementation has produced mixed results, including delays in some states accessing education funds and concerns about administrative complexity, inconsistent oversight, and fragmented program management.

MCGRAW HILL - NUMBER ROUTINES

Build Number Sense Through Daily Math Routines

Every student can grow as a mathematical thinker, and daily number routines help make that possible. These short, engaging activities give Florida students frequent opportunities to explore numbers, share strategies, and notice patterns—strengthening mental math, reasoning, and confidence over time. When teachers incorporate routines consistently, students begin to see themselves as capable problem solvers, not just “math people” or “non‑math people.”

McGraw Hill is committed to supporting Florida educators in creating math classrooms where every learner develops a strong math identity. Discover how simple, intentional routines can transform your instruction and help students build lasting number sense.

NATIONAL NEWS

GOP targets education precedent

A group of House Republicans, led by Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, is calling for the overturning of Plyler v. Doe, a 1982 Supreme Court decision that guarantees undocumented children access to free public education under the 14th Amendment. The push emerged during a House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing focused on constitutional interpretation and the role of federal courts, where Roy, who chairs the subcommittee, argued the ruling is “constitutionally indefensible” and has imposed growing financial pressures on schools and taxpayers since its introduction. Democrats strongly opposed the effort, emphasizing the long-term economic and social benefits of educating all children regardless of immigration status. Legal experts also warned of significant unintended consequences if the ruling were overturned. Thomas Saenz of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund testified that denying education to undocumented children could discourage school attendance more broadly, including among students with undocumented family members, and would make truancy laws far harder to enforce.

STATE NEWS

Florida's school choice debate heats up

Nathan Hoffman, Senior Legislative Director for the Foundation for Florida’s Future, argues that the ongoing debate over school choice in Florida overlooks critical data and accountability. He emphasizes that Florida has led the nation in school choice for over 20 years, with independent research showing positive outcomes for both students and public schools. Hoffman stated: "If a gold-standard study existed showing these programs are a net negative, it’s been hiding in a locked vault." He also addresses misconceptions about funding accountability and declining public school enrollment, attributing the latter to demographic shifts rather than school choice. Ultimately, he advocates for empowering parents to choose the best educational options for their children, rather than protecting the existing system at all costs.

TECHNOLOGY

AI-driven simulations reshape teacher training

School districts are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence (AI)-powered simulation platforms, such as BranchED’s AuthenTECH Practice, to help train teachers through interactive, low-stakes classroom scenarios that replicate student behavior using large language models. The tools aim to bridge the gap between theory and practice by allowing educators to rehearse lessons, manage classroom challenges, and receive immediate feedback, with early evidence suggesting improvements in teacher confidence and performance. While proponents highlight the flexibility, realism, and ability to refine skills through repetition, developers and educators note the need for careful design to ensure accuracy and prevent reinforcing bad habits, with future plans pointing toward more scalable, self-guided training and broader use in school leadership development.

How K–12 IT teams scale device management

K–12 school districts managing one-to-one device programs face significant operational challenges, as small IT teams are responsible for configuring, deploying, securing, maintaining, and refreshing thousands of devices. Manual processes quickly become unsustainable at scale, diverting time away from supporting teaching and learning. To address this, districts are increasingly adopting automation and zero-touch provisioning tools that allow devices to be preconfigured, enrolled, and ready to use straight out of the box. This reduces deployment time, simplifies identity management through platforms like Clever and ClassLink, and enables faster distribution to students.

Innovation space sparks creativity

Norland Middle School has launched a new Innovation Space designed to enhance student engagement and creativity. Chief academic officer Lourdes Diaz said the innovation spaces "are a testament to the power of public-private partnerships and how together, we can really make a difference for our students." The space features an open-concept area, a Makerspace with robotics, and an interactive floor for various activities. The initiative, supported by a $2m partnership, aims to create 18 Innovation Spaces for middle school students over two years.

CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION

Disability-first school design works

A new study highlights how schools that redesign systems around the needs of students with disabilities, rather than requiring students to adapt, are achieving improved academic outcomes, engagement, and wellbeing. The research examined three learner-centered schools in Minnesota, New York, and Wisconsin, where more than 45% of students have individualized education plans or similar supports. These schools adopt flexible structures, inclusive practices, and daily routines that prioritize student needs, such as sensory-friendly environments, mentorship programs, and integrated support systems. Students with disabilities showed measurable gains in reading and math performance, higher graduation rates, fewer behavioral incidents, and increased engagement.

Green schools save big bucks

In Warren County, Kentucky, the school district has saved over $2m in utility costs by retrofitting five schools with solar panels and implementing energy efficiencies. A report from the Building Power Resource Center highlights that investing in green buildings not only benefits the environment but also provides financial relief for schools, allowing funds to be redirected towards teachers and resources. Despite challenges from federal policy changes, state programs continue to support clean energy projects in schools across various states, ensuring that districts can still pursue sustainable energy solutions.

CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION

Hospitality jobs surge in central Florida

CareerSource Central Florida has highlighted a pressing need for workers in the hospitality and tourism sectors, estimating that nearly 79,000 positions must be filled in the next three years. Mia Carmichael, a junior at Jones High School, is participating in the High School Career Express Program, which allows students to explore various hospitality roles. “I think it’s a great opportunity. A lot of kids don’t know what they want to do or what they want to be, so this opens up plenty of doors,” Carmichael said. The program, launched two years ago, offers hands-on experiences in areas like culinary arts, engineering, and housekeeping.

HIGHER EDUCATION

Some black students feel unsafe after racist texts

Florida International University (FIU) is grappling with a climate of fear that stifles discussions on race and racism, particularly following a scandal involving a group chat where conservative students used racial slurs and called for violence against Black individuals. Black students report feeling unsafe and unheard, with many calling for accountability from those involved. FIU President Jeanette Nuñez announced charges against chat participants for violating the university's non-discrimination policy, but many students feel that the administration's response lacks substance.

Teacher channels reshape parent trust

Teacher-run YouTube channels are rapidly gaining popularity in South Korea, with around 870 channels and rising participation as parents increasingly turn to educators’ online content for trusted guidance on school life and academic preparation. The trend has been fueled by the growth of digital learning since COVID-19 and is widely viewed as credible, with 95% of surveyed parents considering such content trustworthy, but it has also raised concerns about student privacy, teachers’ focus, and the influence of commercial incentives. As more teachers engage in content creation, often alongside paid lectures or sponsorships, experts warn that outdated regulations and unclear guidelines are struggling to keep pace, calling for clearer standards to balance educational value, professional responsibilities, and student protection.
