Austin High faces bathroom bill backlash

The Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's office has notified Austin ISD of a complaint alleging a violation of Senate Bill 8, known as the Women's Privacy Act. The complaint, filed via a state tip line, claims a student at Austin High School used a bathroom inconsistent with their sex at birth. Paxton stated: "The law is clear that political subdivisions in Texas must not allow biological men to use girls' bathrooms and locker rooms." The district faces a potential penalty of $5,000 per day for ongoing violations, differing from the penalties outlined in SB 8. The complaint was linked to a parent who reported the issue to the school in January and February, claiming no resolution was provided. Austin ISD is currently investigating the matter.

STATE NEWS

State takeovers gain political edge

School district takeovers are rising again, especially in Republican-led states, with Texas emerging as a leading example. The 74 argues that while states still cite academic failure and financial distress, the rationale has become more openly political, often shifting control away from communities of color for limited academic gains. Fort Worth board member Roxanne Martinez warned that losing elected representation would silence local families, while researcher Domingo Morel said, “states don’t really care about having to justify this action” the way they once did.

Texas microschools eye voucher boom

The Houston Chronicle looks at the fast-growing microschool movement in Texas, where tiny schools blending homeschooling and private education could expand sharply under the state’s new $1bn voucher program. Mindsprout Montessori is presented as one example of a flexible, lower-cost model. Supporters say microschools offer customization and accessibility, while critics warn that weak oversight, uncertain academic outcomes, and the risk of sudden closures could leave families vulnerable. The new accreditation pathways may let many microschools qualify for the full $10,500 voucher.

NATIONAL NEWS

Learning ecosystems gain momentum

A new National Commission on Learning Ecosystems, led by New America, will study how schools, employers, libraries, museums, universities, and nonprofits can work together to expand learning beyond classrooms. The effort will draw lessons from 12 existing ecosystems, including Pittsburgh’s Remake Learning network, which has supported projects like competency-based instruction, internships, and redesigned school spaces. Lisa Guernsey, senior director of birth-to-12th-grade education policy at New America, said the work is about “recognizing how many assets are already on the ground in neighborhoods and communities.”

GOVERNANCE

Wichita Falls ISD avoids takeover

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has decided not to take over Wichita Falls ISD, which faced potential state intervention due to years of poor academic performance. Kirby Middle School was at the center of this issue, having received unacceptable ratings for five consecutive years. The district has already closed Kirby and moved students to Hirschi Middle School, where they are now benefiting from a partnership with Third Future Schools. Superintendent Donny Lee said he expects no failing campuses when accountability ratings are released later this year.

Aquino announces retirement from SAISD

Jaime Aquino, the Superintendent of San Antonio ISD, has announced his retirement effective January 2027 after a 40-year career in public education.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Fort Worth ISD community fights for student safety

As the Texas Education Agency prepares to take over Fort Worth ISD, community members are urging the school board to adopt a policy to safeguard students from immigration raids. Sabrina Ball, a parent and co-leader of Indivisible 12, states that the existing 2017 resolution is inadequate for current needs. She proposed an updated policy that includes notifying parents during immigration inquiries and training staff on immigration laws. Ball stated: "Board policy demanding that law enforcement actually follow the law can be a love letter to your students." The push for policy reform comes as the district faces an impending state takeover, with concerns about the legal implications for staff.

CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION

Katy ISD breaks ground on new school

Katy ISD is set to start construction on its 49th elementary school, following the approval of a $41.02m agreement with Drymalla Construction Company. The new school, located at Pitts Road and Sunterra Point Drive, is essential due to the growing population in the district's northwest area. The project will be financed through the district's $840.6m bond, which received 95% voter approval in November 2023. An additional $11m will cover furniture, equipment, technology, and other costs. Construction is expected to begin in March and be completed by June 2027.

Lehman High unveils new arts space

Students at Lehman High School now enjoy enhanced fine arts facilities with the opening of the Lehman Vertical Team Auditorium. The grand opening featured performances from dance, choir, mariachi, band, and orchestra students, alongside theater students showcasing monologues and musical theater. The auditorium boasts an 800-seat capacity, a scene shop, two classrooms, and storage space. This project was funded by Proposition B of the 2023 voter-approved bond, which allocated $53m for the renovation and expansion.

Students dive into ocean science

High school students from Katy, Corpus Christi, Austin, and Arkansas participated in the Dolphin Challenge, a regional ocean science competition hosted by Texas Sea Grant at Texas A&M University–Galveston. The event featured a buzzer-style contest testing knowledge in marine biology, ocean chemistry, climate science, and coastal policy. “This event was made possible by our incredible partners and volunteers,” said Brandi Keller, Galveston County Coastal & Marine Resources Agent. Seven Lakes High School from Katy emerged as the regional champions.

INTERNATIONAL

South Korea targets AI deepfakes ahead of June education vote

South Korea is moving to ban the use of deepfake content in local education superintendent elections, extending existing election laws that already restrict AI-generated media in other political contests. Under the proposed amendment, producing or using deepfakes within 90 days of an election could lead to up to seven years in prison or fines of 10m–50m won ($6,700 - $33,500), as authorities seek to prevent misinformation ahead of the 3 June 2026 elections. The move follows controversy over an artificial intelligence-generated campaign video posted by a candidate, which sparked criticism and renewed concerns about the influence of manipulated media on election fairness.
